Earthquake Coverage | Missouri Department of Insurance

NEWS RELEASE: Missouri Department of Insurance Recommends Homeowners to Consult with their Insurance Agents for Earthquake Coverage

09/24/2015
As Published on Dept. Of Insurance BlogContact:  public.govdelivery.com

Missouri Department of Insurance | insurance.mo.gov

Jefferson City, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Insurance is encouraging homeowners to check their insurance policies for earthquake coverage. Only three out of every 10 homes are covered in Missouri. That number drops to two out of every 10 homes in the New Madrid Seismic Zone.

The New Madrid area is the most active earthquake zone in the U.S. east of the Rocky Mountains. Most homeowners insurance policies do not cover earthquake damage. Separate earthquake coverage, called an “endorsement,” must be purchased.

“Having earthquake coverage is the best way to ensure you and your family, as well as our state, can recover from an earthquake,” said Insurance Director John M. Huff. However, the department’s 2015 Earthquake Report shows that Missouri is experiencing a coverage crisis.

“We have reached a critical juncture where the amount of uninsured property in Missouri will soon eclipse the amount of insured residential property, estimated at $101 billion. This could jeopardize our ability to fully recover from a major earthquake.”

Some homeowners may not buy coverage, expecting the federal government to help rebuild their homes should a major earthquake hit, Huff said. Under FEMA’s Individual Assistance program, the maximum grant award is $32,900, far less than what most homes are worth.

Missouri Auto Insurance Coverages – Comprehensive & Collision

Many people refer to Comprehensive and Collision Insurance as “full coverage”.  The correct term is “comprehensive and collision”.  Comprehensive and collision coverages are optional; however, more often they are typically required as part of a car loan or lease agreement.  Think about it — when you cause an accident, what is your first thought after you see the damage done to your vehicle?  If you have liability coverage only, you could be left to pay for your own damages out of your pocket.

Comprehensive Coverage offers protection when an animal my be involved. | Alternatives Insurance of Chesterfield | (636) 449-1213

Comprehensive Insurance Coverages

Comprehensive will help cover costs of damage to your vehicle that result from an event that is not an accident, such as severe weather or fire, theft, vandalism, hail, falling objects, animals or fowl, natural disasters, and all glass breakage.

Collision Insurance Coverage

Collision Coverage pays for damages to your vehicle after colliding with another car or object.  Additional options include Medical payments, Rental car reimbursement, Emergency roadside assistance and more.

Missouri Auto Insurance Coverages – Liability

Liability Coverage protects the other person(s) involved with an accident that is your fault.  Liability coverages include Bodily Injury Per Person, Bodily Injury Per Accident, Property Damage and Uninsured Motorists Coverage.

Let’s say for example, you have 50/100/50.  $50,000 is for Bodily Injury, Per Person.  If you should have an accident and a person was severely injured and incurred $75,000 in medical bills, your insurance will only cover $50,000.  $100,000 covers the Total Bodily Injury Per Accident.  This is used when multiple people are injured in the same accident.  So if you’re involved in an at-fault accident and 5 people are severely injured, your insurance will only pay $100,000 total.

Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage

This coverage is for bodily injury at the same minimums as those listed for liability coverage. Using the example above, the Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage would be $50,000. This amount protects you if you’re in a car accident and the other driver is at fault – and that driver has minimum liability limits or doesn’t have car insurance! This coverage also provides insurance for injury-related medical expenses and costs associated with repairing damage to your car.

MISSOURI AUTO INSURANCE COVERAGES | Alternatives Insurance of Chesterfield | (636) 449-1213Medical Coverage

Medical coverage is an important auto insurance coverage. Also known as Med Pay, medical car insurance covers the costs (up to a limit) for injuries that you, or your passengers may have when riding in and while loading or unloading the vehicle.  You and your family may be covered as a pedestrian also.

Personal Injury Protection (PIP)

Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage is an extended form of MedPay. PIP may cover expenses that are related to injury, but not necessarily medical, such as lost wages, childcare and funeral costs. PIP coverage is currently required by sixteen states. If you are already insured under a good health insurance policy, then fortunately, you may not need to buy more than the minimum required amount of PIP or MedPay insurance–enough to cover your health insurance deductible or other out-or-pocket expenses such as co-pays.

Missouri Auto Insurance – Optional Coverages

There are many optional auto insurance coverages, and some may qualify you for additional auto insurance discounts.  These coverages include Glass Breakage Coverage, Emergency Roadside Assistance Protection, Rental Reimbursement Coverage and GAP Insurance coverage.

You can learn more about these coverage types, and additional coverages by visiting our Auto Insurance page, and by reading the Bodily Injury and Property Damage Coverage pages in your policy.

MISSOURI AUTO INSURANCE COVERAGES | Alternatives Insurance of Chesterfield | (636) 449-1213The Premium – It’s Not Optional!

All auto insurance policies involve a premium, which is the payment a customer makes to have auto insurance. Premiums for auto insurance can be extremely divergent and are determined by a number of factors. Gender is the major determinant for auto insurance premiums. Statistically, men are 80% more likely to be involved in an accident, and therefore have a greater need for insurance. Auto insurance premiums for men are typically higher than auto insurance premiums for women. Similarly, teenagers are considered high risk and will have to pay higher auto insurance premiums as well. The auto insurance premium can be reduced if the teenager takes a defensive driving course. Many states require teenagers to take defensive driving courses in order to obtain a driving permit and auto insurance.

The Deductible

It is customary for auto insurance plans to have a deductible that the customer is responsible for before the auto insurance provider offers coverage of expenses. Deductibles can have an effect on the coverage available under an auto insurance plan.

Missouri Auto Insurance Coverages – Key Points

You may be asked for proof of insurance at any and all of these times: at vehicle registration, at the time of an accident, and any time when driving the vehicle. It is suggested that the owner of the car keeps proof of insurance in the car at all times, instead of on his or her person, so that it can be available at all times, no matter who is driving.

MISSOURI AUTO INSURANCE COVERAGES | Alternatives Insurance of Chesterfield | (636) 449-1213

You should never drive without Missouri auto insurance.  Any violations of state law regarding auto insurance could result in a hefty fine, suspension of your driver’s license, and possibly time in jail. The dire consequences of driving while uninsured are not worth the neglect of paying for insurance. The chance that an uninsured driver will avoid detection is slim; he is likely to be caught and strictly punished–not to mention and increase in the cost of insurance for 3 to 5 years.

Missouri Auto Insurance Uninsured Motorist Coverage

Uninsured Motorist Coverage is Required by Missouri Law

Missouri Auto Insurance Uninsured Motorist Coverage | Alternatives Insurance of Chesterfield | (636) 449-1213Uninsured Motorist Coverage protects responsible drivers, against those who may not have insurance, or only have the state minimum required insurance.  If an insured driver is involved in a no-fault accident with an individual who is uninsured , the insured driver is stuck with the bills incurred from the accident that was not their fault!  It is especially important for drivers to protect themselves against those that may not have auto insurance.

Alternatives Insurance of Chesterfield Agents encourage our clients to carry more than the minimum Uninsured Motorist Coverage that is required by law. Often times, we see consumers left with financial despair because they were not adequately insured.

Missouri Auto Insurance Uninsured Motorist Coverage is required by Law.  An insurance company cannot issue a contract of automobile liability coverage in Missouri without including Uninsured Motorist Coverage on the policy.

Missouri Auto Insurance TIP:  It is also a good idea to have the same limits for Uninsured Motorist Coverage as you have for bodily injury liability. THIS COVERAGE IS FOR YOU. It pays for your injuries and damage to your car, if another person is at fault and has no or not enough libility insurance coverage.

Missouri Auto Insurance Uninsured Motorist Coverage  is designed to help drivers pay for the bills associated with a crash that was caused by another person who either doesn’t have auto insurance or has a policy with liability limits that do not cover the loss.  Have you reviewed your policy? Does it have enough coverage to protect you if the worst should happen?

Missouri Auto Insurance Uninsured Motorist Coverage | Alternatives Insurance of Chesterfield | (636) 449-1213OUR AGENTS OFFER A FREE MISSOURI AUTO INSURANCE RISK ASSESSMENT.  As part of our services, Alternatives Insurance of Chesterfield provides a free risk assessment to ensure the right protection is in place for you and your family.  We look at your overall worth, what assets you have that could be at risk, and how your family could be affected by a financial loss.

The coverage limits for Uninsured Motorist Coverage protection can range from $20,000 up to $1 million.  Our agents consider a number of factors, including how much your car is worth, what kind of medical insurance you carry, whether you are a homeowner, etc.

Missouri Auto Insurance Uninsured Motorist Coverage offers coverage for bodily injury and can offer coverage for damages to your car. In addition to injuries to the driver, the bodily injury portion of Uninsured Motorist Coverage may also cover injuries to your passengers or family members who are driving the vehicle at the time of an accident.  All the coverages in your auto policy apply when you are driving, but they also apply when other people are driving your vehicle.

Missouri Auto Insurance Uninsured Motorist Coverage will also pay for damages to a vehicle that was parked and not occupied when the at fault party is unknown, commonly known as a “hit and run”.   Your auto uninsured motorist coverage will pay for these “hit and run” damages less your deductible.

Missouri Auto Insurance Uninsured Motorist Coverage | Alternatives Insurance of Chesterfield | (636) 449-1213Missouri Auto Insurance Uninsured Motorist Coverage is especially important for Motorcycle drivers. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a motorcycle rider is 35 times more likely to suffer serious injury or death from an accident than occupants in a passenger car. The NHTSA also states that the motorcyclist is rarely at fault when involved in an accident. If you are in a motorcycle accident and the other party has no or insufficient liability insurance, you can face significant costs for an accident you didn’t cause.

For those uninsured , the plea of guilty WILL RESULT in the entry of a conviction on a driving offense. Convictions for offenses will be sent to the Department of Public Safety for entry on your driving record, or to the Department of Natural Resources, and MAY RESULT in the loss of your license by those agencies.

In 2014, the Insurance Research Council News published an article in The Insurance Journal discussing the cost of uninsured motorist claims has risen dramatically in the past decade. Missouri law prohibits an uninsured driver, who is the owner of the vehicle or a driver operating a vehicle with or without permission who is uninsured, from collecting for non-economic damages in a civil action against an insured motorist alleged to be at fault for an accident.  However, the limitation does not apply to passengers in an uninsured driver’s vehicle and does not limit the recovery of benefits provided or economic losses. Furthermore, recovery of non-economic damages in instances where an insured driver who is at fault because of operating a vehicle while under the influence of drugs or alcohol will still be allowed under the new law.

Missouri Auto Insurance Uninsured Motorist Coverage | Alternatives Insurance of Chesterfield | (636) 449-1213

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the state of Missouri, the law reads as follows:

  1. An uninsured motorist shall waive the ability to have a cause of action or otherwise collect for non-economic loss against a person who is in compliance with the financial responsibility laws of this chapter due to a motor vehicle accident in which the insured driver is alleged to be at fault. For purposes of this section, the term “uninsured motorist” shall include:

(i) An uninsured driver who is the owner of the vehicle;

(ii) An uninsured permissive driver of the vehicle; and

(iii) Any uninsured no permissive driver.

Such waiver shall not apply if it can be proven that the accident was caused, in whole or in part, by a tort-feasor who operated a motor vehicle under the influence of drugs or alcohol, or who is convicted of involuntary manslaughter under subdivision (2) of subsection 1 of section 565.024, or assault in the second degree under subdivision (4) of subsection 1 of section 565.060.

  1. The provisions of this section shall not apply to an uninsured motorist whose immediately previous insurance policy meeting the requirements of section 303.190 was terminated or non-renewed for failure to pay the premium, unless notice of termination or nonrenewal for failure to pay such premium was provided by such insurer at least six months prior to the time of the accident.
  1. In an action against a person who is in compliance with the financial responsibility laws prescribed by this chapter by a person deemed to have waived recovery under subsection 1 of this section:

(i) Any award in favor of such person shall be reduced by an amount equal to the portion of the award representing compensation for non-economic losses;

(ii) The trier of fact shall not be informed, directly or indirectly, of such waiver or of its effect on the total amount of such person’s recovery.

  1. Nothing in this section shall be construed to preclude recovery against an alleged tort-feasor of benefits provided or economic loss coverage.
  2. Passengers in the uninsured motor vehicle are not subject to such recovery limitation.

What Insurance Means, Premiums and Deductibles

Alternatives Insurance of Chesterfield | Missouri Auto Insurance Education | (636) 449-1213Alternatives Insurance of Chesterfield is not only an insurance agency, our licensed agents care about our clients’ well-being. We provide the tools and resources necessary for consumers to receive the proper Missouri Auto Insurance Education.  Helping you understand your policy is our duty as a Trusted Choice Agent.

As part of our Missouri Auto Insurance Education, we have included the basic information about your auto insurance policy. We encourage you to schedule a free review your individual policy for specific details on coverages, terms, limits, conditions, and exclusions.

Foundation of Missouri Auto Insurance

An insurance policy is a contract between a policy holder and an insurance company.  All policies are unilateral in that the policy holder pays the insurance company a premium. The purpose of an auto insurance policy is to make one whole, or return the policy holder back to their original condition prior to a covered financial loss.  For example: you own a 2015 vehicle with actual cash value of $20,000 and the car was totaled by a covered peril.  The recovery amount is limited to the amount of the actual loss incurred, and not the actual cash value – or replacement cost less depreciation.

Laws and Regulations

Missouri law requires motorists to have auto insurance.  No owner of a motor vehicle registered in Missouri may operate, register, or maintain registration of a motor vehicle, or permit another person to operate the vehicle, unless the owner maintains the required liability coverage.

* Proof of insurance shall be carried in the insured motor vehicle at all times. *

Missouri law requires all drivers to carry some types of coverage – at least state minimum – in the amount of $25,000 because of bodily injury to or death of 1 person in any 1 accident and, subject to the limit for 1 person, $50,000 because of bodily injury to or death of 2 or more persons in any 1 accident, and $10,000 because of injury to or destruction of property of others in any 1 accident.

The Missouri Auto Insurance Policy

There are 6 primary components to your auto insurance policy and our licensed agents can help you determine the best coverages you need for your situation with a price that meets your budget.  For example: if you have 2 teenage drivers on your policy and own a $500,000 home – we would recommend enough coverage for a loss up to $500,000 so that your mortgage is covered in case of loss.

Liability Insurance protects you, the insured/policy holder, against a claim made by another party, and covers the insured’s legal responsibility to body and property damage.

  • Bodily injury liability (BI) insurance covers you if you cause an accident in which someone else is injured. Your policy is designed to pay claims for each person injured in an accident, and limits the total paid per occurrence.
  • Property damage liability (PD) insurance covers you when you damage someone else’s property. For example, your property damage will pay out when you are at fault for an accident that causes damage to someone else’s car.
  • Collision insurance pays for damage to your car if you run into another object. This coverage is not required by law, although your bank may require it if you have a lien on your car. This is commonly known as “full coverage”.
  • Comprehensive insurance covers you in case your car is damaged other than a collision. The covered perils include hail, fire, theft, flood, earthquake, explosion, falling objects, and encounters with wildlife, such as deer. Comprehensive is optional coverage and you may choose your deductible amount.
  • Uninsured/Underinsured motorist (UM/UIM) insurance covers your expenses when you are hit by a driver who does not carry adequate, if any, auto insurance. Our agents always recommend carrying uninsured/underinsured motorist insurance so that you are not left with a financial loss because of someone else’s negligence to carry auto insurance.
  • Medical insurance coverage (Med Pay/MPC) acts as primary coverage for medical expenses you and your passengers incur if injured in a motor vehicle accident, regardless who’s at fault. Med pay can help you pay your bills as soon as they are incurred.

Cost of Missouri Auto Insurance

Insurance premiums are determined by the statistics of a large group of people who share the same risk. Many factors can affect your premium, and they all help determine how likely you are to have an accident.  Click here for more information from the Insurance Information Institute.  Some of the factors that will be used to determine the cost of insurance can include your driving record, how much you drive, your age, the type of car you drive, etc.  Insurance companies obtain the ratio of exposure by analyzing industry activities and driver statistics.  For example: if you live in an area where the average age of drivers is 45 years and they have decent driving records; the risk is slim, therefore calculating a lower premium.  It’s not that simple, but you get the idea.

Missouri Auto Insurance Deductibles

A deductible for an auto insurance policy is the amount of money you agree to pay for damages before the insurance company provides payment towards the damage/loss.  Choosing a higher deductible means there is less risk of a payout for the insurance company, and so you may pay smaller premiums.  Alternatives Insurance of Chesterfield can help you make an informed decision on how to choose your deductible. Everyone’s situation is different and we understand some may be able to afford a larger deductible, others may not.

  • the length of time a driver has been operating the type of dump truck they want to insure.

If you’re hauling hazardous materials, chemicals or explosives, it will increase your dump truck insurance premium. And if you haul aggregate, we recommend sand and gravel haulers insurance, too.

The Basic Commercial Auto Coverages include the following:

  1. Bodily Injury protects you in case you cause an accident in which another person is injured. It covers the damages that you’re legally responsible for, and provides a legal defense if someone sues you for damages.
  2. Property Damage covers your legal responsibility for damages to the property of others caused by collision with your car. In an accident, the “property of others” is usually another car, but it also covers damage to public and private property such as road signs, bridges or buildings, up to the limits written into the policy.
  3. Fire and Theft Coverage provides protection for your vehicle in case it is damaged by specific, non-collision incidents. Specific circumstances include fire, theft, windstorm or hail, earthquake, lightning, flood, vandalism and collision with an animal.
  4. Collision and Comprehensive Coverage insurance protects you if your tow truck is damaged due to a non-auto accident related event. Comprehensive insurance, as well as fire and theft insurance, would protect you if your tow truck was stolen or damaged due to a fire.
  5. Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage protects you in the event that you or your tow truck incur damages caused by another driver who did not have enough, or any, auto insurance to cover the damages that were made to you or to your tow truck.

Be Aware That Not All Tow Truck Insurance is the Same!

Missouri tow truck insurance coverage options vary among Insurance Carriers, so it is important that you work with a licensed agent that represents multiple, top-rated Transportation Insurance Companies.  With access to multiple carriers, Alternatives Insurance of Chesterfield can customize your Business Auto and Legal Liability policies to fit your Towing Service business needs.

Just a Few of the Tow Truck Insurance Options Include:

On-Hook Towing InsuranceTow Truck Insurance Chesterfield Missouri | Alternatives Insurance of Chesterfield | (636) 449-1213

This coverage will help pay for damages to vehicles you are towing.  The on-hook coverage is generally provided by the garage keepers’ legal liability (GKLL) endorsement (see below). The GKLL limit is a blanket limit that applies to all towing vehicles on the policy.

Garage Keepers Legal Liability Insurance

This will cover vehicles you are storing for clients.  The GLL insurance is usually provided as an automatic endorsement that is added to the Business Auto coverage. This liability coverage covers loss of, or physical damage to vehicles being towed, and while in your care, custody, or control and is designed for towing and wrecker service businesses.  As mentioned above, the on-hook coverage of garage keepers’ legal liability insurance provides coverage for a non-owned vehicle that you are towing.

Miscellaneous Property Floater

A miscellaneous property floater covers your business personal property that is in transit such as tools and other cargo that you have in your tow truck. This coverage will protect against risks of direct physical loss or damage to your scheduled covered property.

Motor Truck Cargo insurance is provided via an endorsement to insure items other than motor vehicles licensed for road use.  This coverage provides legal liability for towing companies while transporting property (cargo) of others.  Since the towing operator is seen as a common carrier, they are responsible for the safe delivery of the goods they are transporting (customer’s vehicles and the contents of the vehicle), and thus owe a very high degree of care to their customer.

Business Income & Extra Expense Insurance

Business income insurance & expense coverages will reimburse your towing business for loss of income and profits if your property is damaged from a covered peril and out-of-service.  The coverage continues until the property can be restored or replaced, or until the limit has been reached. The extra expense coverage includes extra expenses that business must make during the time of loss such as rent, mortgage payments, taxes, and utility services.
