Missouri Auto Insurance Coverages – Comprehensive & Collision

Many people refer to Comprehensive and Collision Insurance as “full coverage”.  The correct term is “comprehensive and collision”.  Comprehensive and collision coverages are optional; however, more often they are typically required as part of a car loan or lease agreement.  Think about it — when you cause an accident, what is your first thought after you see the damage done to your vehicle?  If you have liability coverage only, you could be left to pay for your own damages out of your pocket.

Comprehensive Coverage offers protection when an animal my be involved. | Alternatives Insurance of Chesterfield | (636) 449-1213

Comprehensive Insurance Coverages

Comprehensive will help cover costs of damage to your vehicle that result from an event that is not an accident, such as severe weather or fire, theft, vandalism, hail, falling objects, animals or fowl, natural disasters, and all glass breakage.

Collision Insurance Coverage

Collision Coverage pays for damages to your vehicle after colliding with another car or object.  Additional options include Medical payments, Rental car reimbursement, Emergency roadside assistance and more.

Missouri Auto Insurance Coverages – Liability

Liability Coverage protects the other person(s) involved with an accident that is your fault.  Liability coverages include Bodily Injury Per Person, Bodily Injury Per Accident, Property Damage and Uninsured Motorists Coverage.

Let’s say for example, you have 50/100/50.  $50,000 is for Bodily Injury, Per Person.  If you should have an accident and a person was severely injured and incurred $75,000 in medical bills, your insurance will only cover $50,000.  $100,000 covers the Total Bodily Injury Per Accident.  This is used when multiple people are injured in the same accident.  So if you’re involved in an at-fault accident and 5 people are severely injured, your insurance will only pay $100,000 total.

Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage

This coverage is for bodily injury at the same minimums as those listed for liability coverage. Using the example above, the Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage would be $50,000. This amount protects you if you’re in a car accident and the other driver is at fault – and that driver has minimum liability limits or doesn’t have car insurance! This coverage also provides insurance for injury-related medical expenses and costs associated with repairing damage to your car.

MISSOURI AUTO INSURANCE COVERAGES | Alternatives Insurance of Chesterfield | (636) 449-1213Medical Coverage

Medical coverage is an important auto insurance coverage. Also known as Med Pay, medical car insurance covers the costs (up to a limit) for injuries that you, or your passengers may have when riding in and while loading or unloading the vehicle.  You and your family may be covered as a pedestrian also.

Personal Injury Protection (PIP)

Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage is an extended form of MedPay. PIP may cover expenses that are related to injury, but not necessarily medical, such as lost wages, childcare and funeral costs. PIP coverage is currently required by sixteen states. If you are already insured under a good health insurance policy, then fortunately, you may not need to buy more than the minimum required amount of PIP or MedPay insurance–enough to cover your health insurance deductible or other out-or-pocket expenses such as co-pays.

Missouri Auto Insurance – Optional Coverages

There are many optional auto insurance coverages, and some may qualify you for additional auto insurance discounts.  These coverages include Glass Breakage Coverage, Emergency Roadside Assistance Protection, Rental Reimbursement Coverage and GAP Insurance coverage.

You can learn more about these coverage types, and additional coverages by visiting our Auto Insurance page, and by reading the Bodily Injury and Property Damage Coverage pages in your policy.

MISSOURI AUTO INSURANCE COVERAGES | Alternatives Insurance of Chesterfield | (636) 449-1213The Premium – It’s Not Optional!

All auto insurance policies involve a premium, which is the payment a customer makes to have auto insurance. Premiums for auto insurance can be extremely divergent and are determined by a number of factors. Gender is the major determinant for auto insurance premiums. Statistically, men are 80% more likely to be involved in an accident, and therefore have a greater need for insurance. Auto insurance premiums for men are typically higher than auto insurance premiums for women. Similarly, teenagers are considered high risk and will have to pay higher auto insurance premiums as well. The auto insurance premium can be reduced if the teenager takes a defensive driving course. Many states require teenagers to take defensive driving courses in order to obtain a driving permit and auto insurance.

The Deductible

It is customary for auto insurance plans to have a deductible that the customer is responsible for before the auto insurance provider offers coverage of expenses. Deductibles can have an effect on the coverage available under an auto insurance plan.

Missouri Auto Insurance Coverages – Key Points

You may be asked for proof of insurance at any and all of these times: at vehicle registration, at the time of an accident, and any time when driving the vehicle. It is suggested that the owner of the car keeps proof of insurance in the car at all times, instead of on his or her person, so that it can be available at all times, no matter who is driving.

MISSOURI AUTO INSURANCE COVERAGES | Alternatives Insurance of Chesterfield | (636) 449-1213

You should never drive without Missouri auto insurance.  Any violations of state law regarding auto insurance could result in a hefty fine, suspension of your driver’s license, and possibly time in jail. The dire consequences of driving while uninsured are not worth the neglect of paying for insurance. The chance that an uninsured driver will avoid detection is slim; he is likely to be caught and strictly punished–not to mention and increase in the cost of insurance for 3 to 5 years.

Missouri Auto Insurance Uninsured Motorist Coverage

Uninsured Motorist Coverage is Required by Missouri Law

Missouri Auto Insurance Uninsured Motorist Coverage | Alternatives Insurance of Chesterfield | (636) 449-1213Uninsured Motorist Coverage protects responsible drivers, against those who may not have insurance, or only have the state minimum required insurance.  If an insured driver is involved in a no-fault accident with an individual who is uninsured , the insured driver is stuck with the bills incurred from the accident that was not their fault!  It is especially important for drivers to protect themselves against those that may not have auto insurance.

Alternatives Insurance of Chesterfield Agents encourage our clients to carry more than the minimum Uninsured Motorist Coverage that is required by law. Often times, we see consumers left with financial despair because they were not adequately insured.

Missouri Auto Insurance Uninsured Motorist Coverage is required by Law.  An insurance company cannot issue a contract of automobile liability coverage in Missouri without including Uninsured Motorist Coverage on the policy.

Missouri Auto Insurance TIP:  It is also a good idea to have the same limits for Uninsured Motorist Coverage as you have for bodily injury liability. THIS COVERAGE IS FOR YOU. It pays for your injuries and damage to your car, if another person is at fault and has no or not enough libility insurance coverage.

Missouri Auto Insurance Uninsured Motorist Coverage  is designed to help drivers pay for the bills associated with a crash that was caused by another person who either doesn’t have auto insurance or has a policy with liability limits that do not cover the loss.  Have you reviewed your policy? Does it have enough coverage to protect you if the worst should happen?

Missouri Auto Insurance Uninsured Motorist Coverage | Alternatives Insurance of Chesterfield | (636) 449-1213OUR AGENTS OFFER A FREE MISSOURI AUTO INSURANCE RISK ASSESSMENT.  As part of our services, Alternatives Insurance of Chesterfield provides a free risk assessment to ensure the right protection is in place for you and your family.  We look at your overall worth, what assets you have that could be at risk, and how your family could be affected by a financial loss.

The coverage limits for Uninsured Motorist Coverage protection can range from $20,000 up to $1 million.  Our agents consider a number of factors, including how much your car is worth, what kind of medical insurance you carry, whether you are a homeowner, etc.

Missouri Auto Insurance Uninsured Motorist Coverage offers coverage for bodily injury and can offer coverage for damages to your car. In addition to injuries to the driver, the bodily injury portion of Uninsured Motorist Coverage may also cover injuries to your passengers or family members who are driving the vehicle at the time of an accident.  All the coverages in your auto policy apply when you are driving, but they also apply when other people are driving your vehicle.

Missouri Auto Insurance Uninsured Motorist Coverage will also pay for damages to a vehicle that was parked and not occupied when the at fault party is unknown, commonly known as a “hit and run”.   Your auto uninsured motorist coverage will pay for these “hit and run” damages less your deductible.

Missouri Auto Insurance Uninsured Motorist Coverage | Alternatives Insurance of Chesterfield | (636) 449-1213Missouri Auto Insurance Uninsured Motorist Coverage is especially important for Motorcycle drivers. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a motorcycle rider is 35 times more likely to suffer serious injury or death from an accident than occupants in a passenger car. The NHTSA also states that the motorcyclist is rarely at fault when involved in an accident. If you are in a motorcycle accident and the other party has no or insufficient liability insurance, you can face significant costs for an accident you didn’t cause.

For those uninsured , the plea of guilty WILL RESULT in the entry of a conviction on a driving offense. Convictions for offenses will be sent to the Department of Public Safety for entry on your driving record, or to the Department of Natural Resources, and MAY RESULT in the loss of your license by those agencies.

In 2014, the Insurance Research Council News published an article in The Insurance Journal discussing the cost of uninsured motorist claims has risen dramatically in the past decade. Missouri law prohibits an uninsured driver, who is the owner of the vehicle or a driver operating a vehicle with or without permission who is uninsured, from collecting for non-economic damages in a civil action against an insured motorist alleged to be at fault for an accident.  However, the limitation does not apply to passengers in an uninsured driver’s vehicle and does not limit the recovery of benefits provided or economic losses. Furthermore, recovery of non-economic damages in instances where an insured driver who is at fault because of operating a vehicle while under the influence of drugs or alcohol will still be allowed under the new law.

(ii) The trier of fact shall not be informed, directly or indirectly, of such waiver or of its effect on the total amount of such person’s recovery.

  1. Nothing in this section shall be construed to preclude recovery against an alleged tort-feasor of benefits provided or economic loss coverage.
  2. Passengers in the uninsured motor vehicle are not subject to such recovery limitation.

Chesterfield MO Auto Insurance

Chesterfield MO Auto Insurance In A Nutshell

Chesterfield MO Auto Insurance | Alternatives Insurance® of Chesterfield | (636) 449-1213Auto insurance is something that every driver should have. A lot of people simply go and get a quote for the minimum that is required for Chesterfield MO Auto Insurance, and do not really pay attention to the kind of coverage that they are getting. It is important that you recognize the value of the car insurance coverage that you are getting. Alternatives Insurance® of Chesterfield can help you understand how much the right auto insurance coverage can protect you from the financial liability you will have to assume, if you should get into an auto accident. It is important to find out what kind of protection your auto insurance provides, understand your insurance needs, and make sure that the insurance protection you purchase will give you the best insurance coverage at the most affordable rate.

An auto insurance policy is a contract between you and the insurance company.  The contract guarantees that the insurance company will pay up to the covered amount for necessary expenses resulting from named contingencies. Simply put, if you injure another person or damage their vehicle, your car insurance company would pay them up to the maximum amount stated in your contract for medical expenses or repair expenses.

There are many types of coverages available to you in an auto insurance policy.  The following list will help you understand Chesterfield MO Auto Insurance, so you can make the right decision that meets your needs.

LIABILITY COVERAGE

Missouri drivers are required to purchase and maintain minimum amounts of liability coverage. Liability insurance coverage is typically a required type of car insurance. Even in the rare state that does not require liability car insurance, you may find that having liability insurance is worth the financial security.

Liability insurance includes 1) Bodily injury coverage, which pays for injuries suffered by others in an accident you caused and 2) Property damage coverage, that pays for damage you cause to another person’s property in an accident.

UNINSURED MOTORIST COVERAGE

Missouri also requires drivers to hold uninsured motorist coverage for bodily injury and property damage.  Liability insurance only pays for bodily injuries or property damage suffered by others when you are at fault in an accident.  Your own injuries or property damage are not covered through liability insurance.  So if your vehicle is damaged and you are injured in an auto accident that is not your fault, the at fault party is responsible for your damages.  If the at fault party has no insurance, then your Uninsured Motorist Coverage will pay for your damages.  In many cases where the at fault party has minimum auto insurance limits, it is not enough to cover all damages, so your Underinsured auto insurance coverage will pay the difference.

MEDICAL CAR INSURANCE COVERAGE

Medical coverage is an important auto insurance coverage. Also known as Med Pay, medical car insurance covers the costs (up to a limit) for injuries that you or  your passengers may have when riding in and while loading or unloading the vehicle.  You and your family may be covered as a pedestrian also.

COMPREHENSIVE AND COLLISION INSURANCE

Comprehensive Insurance Coverages, will help pay for repairs to your car when damaged by an event other than a collision.  Although this coverage may vary between insurance companies, it generally covers damages from fire, theft, vandalism, hail, falling objects, animals or fowl, natural disasters, and all glass breakage. Collision Insurance Coverage will help pay for repairs to your car after it has been damaged in a collision–such as hitting another object.

Comprehensive and collision coverages are optional; however, more often they are typically required as part of a car loan or lease agreement.  Think about this – when you cause an accident, what is your first thought?  Of course, its if everyone is okay, but then you see the damage and wonder how you’ll pay for the other driver’s damage. If you have liability coverage, this will may cover all of those costs. However, if you only carry liability insurance, you could be left to pay for your own damages out of your pocket.

Any of these events can change your insurance rates.  It is imperative to discuss these changes with your agent – you owe it to yourself to have the best coverage for the best price. Auto Insurance Coverages have many components to each policy, and rates vary from company to company.  ISO continues to study statistics and adjusts insurance costs accordingly.  Don’t think because your current carrier had the best price 2 years ago, that it will stay the same when your policy renews.

In order to have the best coverage, you will want to talk with your auto insurance agent about the types of auto insurance coverages that are right for you. If you don’t get the right coverage, you may be at risk, or you may be paying for coverage you do not need.

There are many types of coverages that should be in your insurance policy.  Be sure to read the following information carefully and contact your Alternatives Insurance® of Chesterfield agent to review your policy with you.  We want you to understand the liability and identify and risks that you might have because your auto insurance coverage is not enough to protect your assets.

Liability Coverage

All Missouri drivers are required to purchase and maintain minimum amounts of liability coverage. Liability insurance coverage is typically a required type of car insurance, especially when you purchase a new vehicle.  Don’t let the car dealer tell you that you can drive off the lot because you’re covered.  Think twice and call your agent!

Liability insurance includes the following types of coverage:

  • Bodily injury coverage – pays for injuries suffered by others in an accident you caused.
  • Property damage coverage – pays for damage you cause to another person’s property (typically their vehicle) in an accident.

Minimum state coverage includes:

  • $25,000 for bodily injury, per person.
  • $50,000 for total bodily injury (when multiple people are injured).
  • $10,000 for total property damage.

Uninsured Motorist Coverage

While you may think you’re fully protected with your current policy – consider this, what if someone ran into you and they do not have insurance?  If you do not have Uninsured Motorists Coverage, the liability is on you – not the other driver.

This coverage only pays for your vehicle damages. For comprehensive protection, remember to look into the other 2 main categories of car insurance: liability insurance (Pays for injuries and property damage to others in an accident you cause.) and medical coverages (Helps pay for medical care after you or your passengers sustain injuries in an accident).

Missouri also requires drivers to hold uninsured motorist coverage for bodily injury at the same minimums as those listed for liability coverage.  Liability insurance only pays for bodily injuries or property damage suffered by others when you are at fault in an accident.  Liability insurance only pays for bodily injuries or property damage suffered by others when you are at fault in an accident. Your own injuries or property damage are not covered through liability insurance.

Medical Insurance Coverage

Auto Insurance Coverages Chesterfield MO | Alternatives Insurance® of Chesterfield | (636) 449-1213Medical Insurance coverage is one of three main groups of car insurance that also include liability insurance and vehicle coverages.  Medical car insurance coverage helps pay for costs that may arise after you or your passengers are hurt in a car accident.  Protect yourself and your family.  Medical Insurance Coverages also include injuries suffered by your passengers, injuries you sustain as a pedestrian or bicyclist if you are hit by a car, and necessary dental care resulting from a car accident.  The two main types of medical coverage are Medical payments coverage and Personal injury protection.  Medical Payments Coverage will help pay for your medical bills after you are hurt in an automobile accident. Medical payments will help pay for funeral costs. Did you know nearly 25% of ALL car accidents end in death?

Details may vary depending on your car insurance company. Call and discuss your options with an Alternatives Insurance® of Chesterfield agent to learn more about medical payments coverage.

Comprehensive and Collision Insurance

Comprehensive and collision coverages are optional coverages; however, we highly recommend you carrier these coverages and, ore often they are typically required as part of a car loan or lease agreement. Comprehensive and collision insurance coverage for your car is considered optional and comes mainly in the forms of collision and comprehensive coverages. Based on the coverage, you’ll have protection for damages incurred in a crash or other unexpected events.

Comprehensive Insurance Coverages is protection in the event of an occurrence, that is not a collision, such as hitting an animal and damaging your vehicle.  Comprehensive Insurance will help pay for repairs to your car after it has been damaged. Coverage terms will vary by the insurance company, but you will generally be covered for damage from fire, theft, vandalism, falling objects and natural disasters.

Collision Insurance Coverage will help pay for repairs to your car after it has been damaged in a traffic accident. If you cause an accident, your liability insurance will cover the costs. There is a caveat; if liability insurance is the only protection you have, you could be in a position where the insurance will not pay for damages.

Collision coverage will help pay for repairs to your car (as well as replacement costs, in the event your car is totaled) after crashing into another car, crashing into an object or if your car rolls over.

While most states only require you to be covered for injuries or damage you cause to another person, not many states have requirements in place for damages you incur.

Other Coverages

There are many auto insurance packages to choose from, some of them will qualify you for additional auto insurance discounts. These coverages include Emergency Roadside Assistance, GAP Insurance, Rental Reimbursement Coverage, Glass Breakage Coverage and Modified Car Insurance Coverages.

You can learn more about these coverage types, and additional coverages by visiting our webpage, Auto Insurance, and reading the Bodily Injury and Property Damage Coverage page in your policy.  More information about auto insurance coverages and requirements by law can be found online at Missouri Department of Revenue.

Auto Insurance Discounts Chesterfield Missouri:  Watch Out for Insurance Marketing Schemes

As an automobile insurance customer, you should be on the lookout for insurance marketing schemes. With new insurance companies popping up every day, some of them make bold statements and promise to offer lower monthly premiums, but the coverage is most likely the bare minimum, with a high (sometimes not affordable) deductible, and one accident could drastically increase your costs after you file a claim.

Auto Insurance Discounts Chesterfield Missouri: Non Factory Auto Equipment

If you decided to buy non factory equipment for your vehicle (custom paint or rims, a top of the line stereo system, etc…), check with your agent to make sure that these items are covered.  Many auto insurance policies do not cover aftermarket or non factory equipment.  These extras can be a very expensive loss if not covered.  Some auto insurance companies offer to cover such items, but they must be added to the policy—so ask your agent to make sure.

Auto Insurance Discounts Chesterfield Missouri: Low Annual Mileage Savings

Check and see if your car insurance provider offers any low-mileage breaks. If you do not drive your car often, this could end up saving you a fair amount of money. There is no harm in asking your provider whether they offer something like this and whether or not you qualify.

Auto Insurance Discounts Chesterfield Missouri: Credit Rating Savings

An important consideration in securing affordable auto insurance is the condition of your credit record. It is quite common for insurers to review the credit reports of applicants in order to determine policy price and availability. Therefore, always make certain your credit report is accurate and as clean as possible before shopping for insurance.  Its not a bad idea to check your credit report every 6-12 months.

Auto Insurance Discounts Chesterfield Missouri: Drivers Safety Course Discounts

Take a driving course to get a discount on auto insurance. Young drivers who have taken a driver’s education course are usually eligible for discounted auto insurance rates. Similarly, older drivers who take a defensive driving course are also eligible for discounts on auto insurance. Check with your insurance company to see if they offer these discounts.

Auto Insurance Discounts Chesterfield Missouri: Teen Driver Tips

If you are trying to save money on your auto insurance, you may consider not to buy new cars for teenagers. A better alternative is to have them drive one of your existing vehicles. If you add them to your current insurance plan as an occasional driver, it may be a lot cheaper. If they need to have their own vehicle, a safe, but low cost one (under $5000) that may only need liability coverages, will also save money.   It’s even possible to get a discount, if your kids get good grades.  Be sure to check with your agent about any these or other ways to best meet the insurance needs of youthful drivers.

Auto Insurance Discounts Chesterfield Missouri: Other Auto Insurance Saving Tips

Although many people realize that the type of car can affect the price of insurance, you should also be aware that the rarity of the car will change the price. If you have a car which has very expensive prices of repair, this will be reflected in the price of your insurance as well!

The pr Auto Insurance Discounts Chesterfield Missouri | Alternatives Insurance® of Chesterfield (636) 449-1213ice you pay for car insurance will be affected significantly by the infractions that appear when your records from the DMV are accessed. You will lessen your insurance costs when your points go away. Once they have been removed, it might be a good time to get new quotes on auto insurance!

You should not let your insurance coverage lapse. If you are not able to pay for your insurance policy in full, you should call and talk to on of our agents. If you allow the policy to lapse, many companies will charge you more when you reinstate or purchase a new policy.  You are also taking a big risk should you have an accident. And driving without insurance carries a big DMVpenalty in Missouri and your auto insurance rates could stay high for three or more years. That is a big risk that can be avoided by making a simple phone call to your insurance agent.

Know what factors affect your car insurance rates. The three key considerations in determining your car insurance rates are age, sex, and actual driving record. Higher rates are given to less-experienced drivers, and males in general. Any ticket that takes points off of your license will also result in an increase rate.

A great tip to getting affordable auto insurance is to make sure that you have an accurate policy. You should make sure your current policy matches your situation because if it does not, you could be paying more when you do not have to. This includes your vehicle information, distance driven to/from work, yearly estimated mileage, etc….

When you raise the deductible on your auto insurance policy, it may reduce your auto insurance payments, which could save a substantial
amount of money. However, when increasing your deductible, you may want to ensure you have the amount of the deductible saved and ready to use in case you get into an auto accident.

You should evaluate exactly how much coverage you actually need. Not everybody really needs full coverage, so why should you have to pay for more then you need. For example, if you have an older car, it might not be worth it to have your car covered. It could save you quite a bid of money, but know that if your car gets totaled, you will not get compensated for it.

Insurance is very important and complicated business, and learning more about it makes you a savvier consumer.  However it is best to have an insurance agent that you trust who can help make sure you have the coverages you need for the best value.

The agents at Alternatives Insurance® of Chesterfield will ensure you are taking advantage of every possible auto insurance discount. Discounts include multi-policy, excellent credit, newer vehicles with upgraded safety features, good driving records and for teen drivers, good grade discounts.
